The Brest Free Economic Zone has been established in 1996 for a
period of 50 years. It consists of two separate areas and 5 industrial
estates within the precincts of the city. Total area is 7231 hectares.
The most important trans-European transport corridor Madrid-Paris-Berlin-Warsaw-Brest-Minsk-Moscow
passes through Brest thereby creating a new situation for investment
climate change both in the region and in Belarus as a whole.
In the vicinity of Brest there have been opened many border checkpoints.
Due to a dense network of good-quality roads this regional capital
has gathered into a cluster mane small towns and locality at the
Belorussian side and about 100 thousand inhabitants at the Polish
side to form an agglomeration of 500 thousand people.
Brest as a center of transit communications has a system of changing
from broad to narrow European gauge for trains.
In this region in the FEZ area there is an all-weather international
airport of Category 1, a cargo checkpoint, and a waterway connecting
the Brest river port via Dnepr-Bug channel with the Black Sea.
As is evident from the analysis of performance of the Brest FEZ
enterprises, the volume of products (works, services) in comparable
prices, the number of employed, and export shipments increase by
a factor of 1.3 to 1.5 annually.
Of 100 residents registered here the larges portion has foreign
investments. Total investments amount to USD 300 million. Investors
from 19 countries have been operating here. Among them are Germany,
Belarus, Poland, and Russia.
The FEZ enterprises employ about 14 thousand people. The cost of
services and products provided for a year approaches to USD 430
million which is comparable to the summary output of all enterprises
in Brest. Annual export shipments from FEZ currently exceed USD
270 million.
FEZ would welcome investments for establishing high-tech enterprises
primarily and for pharmaceutical, automobile, electronic and machine-building
industries.
